'There Could Be Some Shark-Punching': Netflix Reveals Exciting Production Update for Tomb Raider Anime (2)

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft showrunner Tasha Huo has hinted at sharks in need of punching ahead of the hit series' second season, which has now been officially confirmed by Netflix.

Per Netflix, Huo recently discussed Lara's journey in the upcoming second season of the animated series, which "Thematically, is about Lara embracing how her dad dealt with grief, which was isolating," she told Tudum. "When we meet Lara, she's very isolated… As we get into Season 2, we're trying to build Lara's team over the course of the show, so she goes from isolated hero, who only wants to do things on her own — a lone wolf — to realizing, 'Actually, I have this really cool team behind me.'"

Huo went on to hint that there may be a shark encounter in Lara's future, implying that some classic Tomb Raider action will eventually take place on the small screen, with Tudum stating, "there might be a shark in Season 2, so there could be some shark-punching in Lara’s near future to look forward to as well." Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is the latest addition to the long-running Tomb Raider franchise that began in 2001 with the original video game of the same name. The franchise focuses on Lara Croft, an archaeologist turned adventurer whose exploits see her traverse the globe in search of mysteries to be solved and ancient secrets to be uncovered. In the years since the original game's debut, the Tomb Raider franchise has spawned over a dozen sequels and spinoffs, multiple live-action feature films starring Angelina Jolie, and countless other pieces of tie-in media and merchandise.

Huo previously discussed what the series' overarching plan looks like in terms of pacing and trajectory, particularly when it comes to exploring Lara Croft as a character. "I think we're going to take as much time as Netflix will give to us," Huo explained. "There's a certain version of her you meet in the show and she's already Classic Lara. But to me, that's not really interesting. I'm curious about how she builds her networks out, how she builds out her relationships. What are the informative traumas, moments, or places that she visits that create the Lara we knew from those '90s games? We get to explore all of it again, for as long as Netflix will let us."

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft Season 1 is currently available to stream on Netflix. Season 2 does not yet have a confirmed release date.
