What was the twist in The Happening? ›

The Happening stars a miscast Mark Wahlberg as Elliot Moore, a high school science teacher who, less than an hour in, figures out the twist: that pissed-off trees and grass, not terrorists, are responsible for the mass suicide events unfolding across the American Northeast.

Why did the Happening not affect some people? This is answered in the script more clearly. The plants affect people who give off "bad vibes." The first time the wind caught up to the group, they were unaffected.

Julian decides to go look for her, leaving his daughter with the Moore's while he hitches a ride. However, when they get to Princeton, it has already been hit by the toxin. Succumbing to it, the driver runs the car into a tree and Julian commits suicide.

However, unlike more modern comedies, the movie presents itself entirely seriously, which was confusing for people seeing the film for the first time. This led to many bad reviews of The Happening, who assumed that the movie was simply a poorly constructed thriller without much meat to it.

The "happening" mysteriously disappears. Three months later, Elliot (Mark Wahlberg) and Alma (Zooey Deschanel) have now adopted Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez) and Alma finds out that she's pregnant. . Alma tells Elliot that she's pregnant and they happily embrace one another.

At its heart though, this is a film about suicide. It's Shyamalan trying to process his horror at the enormity of someone taking their own life.
