2023's San Diego Comic Con provided a little bit of Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake news to whet appetites for the show’s official premiere on Max. Some fans have been clamoring for a Fionna and Cake spinoff since they first appeared in the original series, something Cartoon Network is incredibly aware of. The Fionna & Cake presentation for the series included a poster that features Fionna, Cake, and Simon Petrikov as well as a short trailer.

Since that first SDCC presentation, however, Max has debuted a new trailer for the series. The new trailer is twice the length of the previous one, giving an even better look at just what Fionna and Cake are up to. After the two seemingly lead normal lives in the real world, but dream of adventure, they wind up in a whole new world, potentially an alternate version of the Land of Ooo. Fionna and Cake seek out the help of Simon Petrikov when a new villain targets them, needing Simon's help to save the multiverse.

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Release Date

Everything We Know About Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake (3)

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake is confirmed to premiere in 2023 on Max. The series debuted its first episode at 2023’s San Diego Comic Con. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake’s release date is August 31 on Max after being in development since 2021. The series will consist of 10 half-hour episodes, but the first two will both debut on August 31, with the remainder of the episodes debuting weekly. The show is being called a “limited series” which likely means that’s all that’s planned for Fionna and Cake's spinoff, but that could change in the future.

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Cast

Right now, only the three main voices are confirmed for the Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake cast. Madeleine Martin, Roz Ryan, and Tom Kenny are the only actors officially confirmed. It’s possible, however, that actors who previously voiced characters in the original Adventure Time could appear in the spin-off series as well.

Madeleine Martin voices the titular Fionna. She previously voiced the character in appearances in Adventure Time as well. Martin isn’t just known for her voiceover work (though she does also voice characters for JoJo’s Circus). She’s also appeared in live-action roles in Californication, Hemlock Grove, and What We Do in The Shadows.

Roz Ryan voices the titular Cake the cat. An actress and singer for over 30 years, Ryan’s been all over television and movies. Those who love animation will recognize her for her work as Thalia, one of the Muses in Disney’s Hercules, and she’s reprised the role for multiple Disney projects. She’s also appeared in KC Undercover and Raven’s Home for the Disney Channel. Ryan also appeared in the 2023 Hallmark movie A Nashville Legacy.

Tom Kenny returns to voice Simon Petrikov for the Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake cast. Kenny is best known for his voice work as the title character in Spongebob Squarepants, but he’s also voiced numerous characters for the show. Kenny has a prolific voice-acting career. He’s voiced characters in everything from Rick and Morty to Doc McStuffins. If someone has heard the characters in an animated movie or TV show in the last 25 years, they’ve likely heard Kenny’s work.

Though versions of Gumball and Marshall Lee are glimpsed in the first released trailer for the series, it’s not clear if their original voice actors will be part of the Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake cast. In the original series, they were voiced by Neil Patrick Harris and Donald Glover, respectively.

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Story

Everything We Know About Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake (5)

The Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake story was actually born out of existing episodes of the original Adventure Time story. Character designer Natasha Allegri had shared unused designs of the characters on social media while working on the show, and fan response was so positive, that the decision was made to include them in an episode of Season 3. The gender-swapped versions of Finn the human and Jake the dog became Fionna the human and Cake the cat. They ended up appearing in several episodes as the show went on.

In Adventure Time the two existed as pieces of fanfiction, created by one of the Adventure Time characters, the Ice King. In the limited series, they’ll have their own adventures, though the fanfiction about the two of them does still exist.

A slightly older Fionna than was previously depicted will team up with Simon Petrikov (who was the Ice King in the previous series) to fight a new villain. This time around, Fionna isn’t a kid, but a working adult living a relatively mundane life before it gets turned upside down. She dreams of adventures in an alternate world, sure that her dreams mean something important, before she actually experiences life in the multiverse and discovers that in other worlds, Cake can talk. They’ll be traveling the multiverse as the new villain tries to completely erase them from existence.

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake’s story takes the duo from the modern real world into the more magical Land of Ooo where the real adventure begins. Just how much of the series will be set in each place so far isn’t known, but it's beginning in the modern world sets the show apart even more than gender-swapping the original characters.

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake Trailer

Everything We Know About Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake (6)

The that released for fans at SDCC was only a minute long and featured a lot of quick cuts of adventures. The new Fionna & Cake trailer released by Max is twice that length, giving a better look at just what fans can expect in the new Adventure Time limited series.

For starters, it’s clear that Simon and his villainous alter ego the Ice King are very different people. When he’s approached about his Fionna and Cake fanfiction, he’s sad to remind himself that it’s the Ice King who actually wrote their stories, not Simon. He, however, is not the only character that’s troubled as Fionna finds herself plagued by dreams in an alternate universe that are much like those pieces of fanfiction.

Because the Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake trailer begins with a look at a world that hasn’t seen the effects of the Great Mushroom War like the Land of Ooo in the original Adventure Time series, it has prompted a lot of discussion about just where Fionna and Cake’s home is (or when). That original trailer, as well as the new extended Fionna & Cake trailer kicks off in that world as Fionna wants more magic and adventure in her boring life.

Like the previous trailer for Fionna & Cake, the new two-minute trailer also features a lot of quick cuts of action scenes, teasing a lot of “adventure time” packed into 10 episodes for the series. There's even an older Finn and Jake near the end of the trailer. That could open the door for Jeremy Shada to return to voice the character. It also gives the first glimpse at the new villain for the series. He appears to target Fionna and Cake because they aren’t meant to be traversing the multiverse, and Fionna enlists Simon to help them. Fionna finds herself in the precarious position of not just having to save her world, but multiple worlds, from the mysterious villain. Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake looks to be just as adventurous as the original series, even with only 10 episodes of content to share.
